A few steps forward, many more steps backward
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh is the ninth largest state in the country. It is bigger than Tamil Nadu. But the state has a small population: 2.1 crore. When it was part of Madhya Pradesh, the Chhattisgarh region was considered a "rich land of poor people". And, despite its vast mineral resources and forest wealth, it failed to develop.
Since 2000 the state has been moving on the track of development, with some success in areas like infrastructure and industries as they were given top priority by the then state government.
1x1 polls
In 2000, the state had surplus power which contributed towards the state's speedy industrial development.
There have been quite a few positive developments in the state since its creation: a five-fold increase in budget allocation for all departments, development of a road network, huge increase in irrigation potential, payment of remunerative prices to the farmers and a big jump in the state's per capita income-from Rs 5000 in 2000 to Rs 17,000 now.
But the state also faces a major problem. In the recent years, it has become the centre of Maoist activities. With its dense forests and huge tribal population, the state has become a breeding and training ground for the extremists. The state has been bearing the brunt of Maoist violence, but it has failed to check it. The leftist guerrillas are hyper-active in the state and they may undo all the progress made in seven years. The state struggles with Maoists as it tries to move ahead.
